New York, NY - Deputies and Task Force Officers from the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force Thursday apprehended the suspect wanted for shooting and wounding a rookie NYPD officer in a street tussle Wednesday in Queens.
Devin Spraggins, 22, allegedly brandished a gun during a dispute with another passenger over a seat on an MTA bus Wednesday. After the bus driver flagged down NYPD Officer Brett Boller and his partner, Spraggins pushed one of the officers, prompting a foot chase. The officers caught up to him, resulting in a struggle. Spraggins allegedly shot Boller, seriously wounding him in the hip, and abruptly fled the scene while avoiding two return shots from Boller’s partner.
The USMS NY/NJ RFTF adopted the case immediately and developed information that led them to the Wakefield neighborhood in the Bronx, where they arrested Spraggins in a private residence without incident. A gun was recovered at the scene.
“This was another successful takedown of a dangerous fugitive who is off our New York streets," said Ralph Sozio, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York. “I want to thank the NY/NJ RFTF and the NYPD for their dedicated coordination in apprehending him quickly and without incident."
The New York / New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force began operations in April 2002 and was the first regional fugitive task force to become fully operational following the Presidential Threat Protection Act of 2000. The NY/NJRFTF was the flagship that has allowed seven other regional fugitive task forces to be created across the country. With partnership agreements with over 90 federal, state, or local agencies and 13 fully operational offices, the NY/NJRFTF has successfully apprehended over 95,000 fugitives since inception.
