WASHINGTON – On May 10, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, met with Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office.

During the meeting, Durbin and Perlmutter discussed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on copyrights; the implementation of Senators Durbin and Kennedy’s bipartisan CASE Act – signed into law in 2020 – to provide an efficient, voluntary, and user-friendly venue to resolve small claims copyright disputes; and the Copyright Office’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget request to continue updating and improving its IT systems.

“It was a pleasure to meet with Register Perlmutter this afternoon. I applaud her leadership at the Copyright Office and its efforts to examine the application of copyright law to issues being raised by the growing proliferation of AI. I also appreciate the Office’s continued implementation of our bipartisan CASE Act, which is already helping small creators like photographers and musicians protect their work. I stand by ready to assist if further Congressional action is needed to continue strengthening our intellectual property system,” said Durbin.
